A Memorable Shabbat with the IDF

On Friday night, November 15, 2013, the JCCH had the privilege of sharing a beautiful Shabbat service and dinner with two officers of the Israeli Defense Force.

Rabbi Glazer and Cantor Singer led a special Kabbalat service, which included a prayer for the victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Our Israeli guests were given the honor of leading us in the Prayer for Israel. The service was followed by a delicious Shabbat dinner (thank you New Roc Glatt) where our members had the opportunity to spend time to eat and talk with the IDF officers. At the end of the meal, Captain Eli Nevo, a combat veteran who is an explosives expert, and Lt. Noga Shachar, who is an active duty officer stationed in the West Bank in the Education Corps, shared their stories and answered questions from our members.  In addition to hearing their captivating narratives, the liaison from the FDIF  (Friends of the IDF), Alex Reback, a Scarsdale native, shared his experience as a marksman for the Golani Unit, during the year and a half he spent in the Israeli army. These young men and women were quite impressive. It was a memorable evening, bringing a face and a name to our brothers and sisters who proudly protect our Jewish homeland.
